President Neves kwam naar Rotterdam na zijn staatsbezoek aan Luxemburg. “Het was een kort en krachtig, maar mooi bezoek”, vertelt Alice Fortes die samen met haar team een onderdeel van het bezoek organiseerde. “Het was een aardig vol programma in het WTC waar de President onder andere een inspirerende speech heeft gehouden.” Alice Fortes vertelt dat de connectie tussen Rotterdam en Kaapverdië historisch is. “Dat heeft echt te maken met de haven van Rotterdam waar veel in de jaren 60 Kaapverdische zeemannen terecht kwamen.” Het doel van zo’n bezoek is volgens om de band te versterken en ook om eventueel nieuwe bezoeken te organiseren. “Tijdens het bezoek van de vorige president met de koning en koningin heeft dat echt impact gehad op de ontwikkeling van de haven in Kaapverdië.” Net als raadsleden van onder andere DENK, D66, PvdA, GroenLinks en de ChristenUnie, was ook locoburgemeester Robert Simons van Leefbaar Rotterdam aanwezig om president Neves te ontvangen. Verder waren er zaterdagmiddag 250 Rotterdamse Kaapverdianen.
